Fort Tyler was built out of earth on the highest point in the city in 1862, complete with moat and parapet. The site of one of the last battles of the Civil War and the last Confederate fort captured by Union soldiers, visitors can explore the old fort, which features period cannons. The remains of the fort are located just inside the Alabama side of the Alabama-Georgia state line.
